Lucy SHOTTER/BOLLARD (1851)

Lucy SHOTTER was born in 1851 in Hyson Green, Nottingham. Her mother, Sarah SHOTTER was unmarried. Her father is possibly William Ireland RAVEN. In 1858, Lucy's mother married John BOLLARD and on the 1861 census, Lucy is using her step-father's surname.

In 1870, Lucy marries John WALTERS in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland. John is in the Royal Navy - at the time on board HMS Jackall which was assigned to fishery protection off the west coast of Scotland. On the 1971 census, Lucy is living in Rothesay - John isn't listed in the household so is likely away at sea.*

Lucy's first three children are born in Devonport, Devon (Plymouth): John William (1872), Alfred Henry (1873) and Lucy Sarah Anne (1878). It is assumed that John WALTERS is their father. At the time of the 1881 census, the family is living in Bulwell, Nottingham. John is again absent but Lucy is still listed as married. John may have died overseas in 1881 on board the Cambalu.

Lucy's next child, Mary Jane Elton (1884), is born in Derbyshire.  Charles Thomas Elton (1887) was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Arthur William Raven (1887) was born in Preston, Lancashire and Joseph Edward Elton (1888) was born in Golborne, Lancashire. The father of Mary, Charles, Arthur and Joseph is Charles ELTON, who was listed as a lodger in Lucy's household on the 1881 census - but is no longer with them on the 1891 census.

The family remain in Leigh were the final four children are born: Alice Shaw (1890), Elizabeth Ellen Shaw (1892), James Shaw (1894), Sarah Alice Shaw (1896). The father of Alice, Elizabeth, James and Sarah is likely to be Mark SHAW who was living with the family at the time of the 1891 census. All of Lucy's children have the surname WALTERS.

Lucy worked as a grocer/shop-keeper. She died in 1915 aged 63.

*Lucy's step-father is possibly also living in Rothesay, having remarried Margaret MUNRO in 1870. Lucy's mother is assumed deceased.
