Joseph Edward ELTON-WALTERS (1888)

Joseph Edward WALTERS was born 16 October 1888 in Leigh, Lancashire. His mother was Lucy WALTERS (nee SHOTTER - also known as Lucy BOLLARD, using her step-father's surname). Joseph was one of eleven children born to Lucy: John (1872), Alfred (1873), Lucy (1878), Mary (1884), Charles (1886), Arthur (1887), Joseph (1888), Alice (1890), Elizabeth (1892), James (1894), Sarah (1896).

There is somewhat of a mystery surrounding Joseph's father. Joseph's birth certificate states his father to be John Charles WALTERS but the real father is most likely to be Charles ELTON. Joseph and three of his siblings have the middle name of "Elton" and Joseph later changes uses the surname ELTON-WALTERS. Charles ELTON is lodging with the family at the time of the 1881 census.* To further confuse matters, Joseph's marriage certificate gives his father as Mark ELTON-WALTERS. Most likely the first name of "Mark" was given as it appears in the census that a Mark SHAW lived with the family for a time (1891 census) and is potentially the father of Joseph's youngest siblings, who have the middle name of "Shaw". Mark was likely the man Joseph grew up with as a father figure.

Joseph worked as a coal miner in Lancashire and at the time of marrying Lucy WETHERICK on 16 June 1919 he is a soldier. Joseph and Lucy lived in Brading, Isle of Wight where they had six children: Brian (1925), Marcelle (1926), Ashley (1928), Brodie (1931), Neil (1932) and Barry (1936).

The 1939 Register records Joseph as living in Brading with the family and working as a Coal Merchants Storekeep.

Joseph died in December 1974 in Brading.

* John WALTERS, is either away from the household at this point (possibly in the Navy) or deceased as Lucy is listed as 'widowed' in the 1891 census.
