Albert Stephen GORRINGE (1892)

Albert Stephen GORRINGE was born 1892 in Brighton, Sussex, the fourth child of Harry GORRINGE and Frances Minnie SACRE.

In 1901 he was living in Whichelo Place, Brighton with his parents and siblings Claudian, Ernest, Bessie, Ethel, Gladys, Madeline and William. By 1911 another son, George, had joined the family. Albert was now working as an Outdoor Porter, although on the original Census record this is over-written with 'boot dealer'.

Albert married Lousia GEARING in 1919 and they went on to have five children: Bessie, May, Albert, William and Victor.

In 1923, Albert enlisted in the army (having previously served 7 years) joining the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment.

The 1939 Register records Albert as a hospital patient in Farnborough, Kent. His occupation is listed as 'Incapacitated Dustman'. It is likely he was suffering from Tuberculosis.

Albert died in 1942.

  1. Albert served in 'A' Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (service no 10038) and was injured a few times during (wearing at least 2 wounded stripes) He Joined the Royal Sussex in 1912 at Preston Barracks, in Brighton, and was sent over to Franc as part of the BEF in August 1914 WW1. He was a machine gunner, who must have had an abundance of luck and determination to continue fighting after severe wounds (Shot in lower chest- had ribs removed during surgery. He was the only one of four to survive the experimental operation. He was a true war hero, continuing to fight on until the end. A stubborn fellow- like all the Gorringe's that came after him! Albert is in a very long line of Gorringe's of Brighton that can be traced back to 1700 (back to 1638 through marriage), Father and son occupations being shoe and boot makers with their first shop being 26-28 East Street, Brighton in the early to mid 1700's. It is so nice to think that Gorringe feet are still pounding through the streets of Brighton after 300+ years
